Many believe that reading books is a waste of time and children would be better served doing something more useful.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?
I'm in a disagreement with this statement. In my opinion, while playing outside with friends is good, it's also very important time to teach children to learn to love reading books.

Children, in such tender age, can absorb information much faster
and it will stick in their memories for a longer time than us adults. Let's be honest here, we may understand things better, and we may think that we're better at comprehending things compared to them, but knowledge and/or memories rarely sticks better than when we are a children. For example, I read a book about solar system and planets in my childhood, and can still recall everything that was printed on the book, but I can hardly recall what I was reading on newspaper a week ago.

Reading books in early age also helps children to control their emotions. I love watching
TVs and videos on the internet, but let's admit, those screen time for children is, to put it simply, bad. Excessive screen time for children has been proven to have negative impacts on children, and even adolescents. There are many examples for this, children are more prone to be angry, yell loudly and having a tantrum when they are exposed to screen. If we attune our children to love reading books, they can learn many things, and also control their emotions better.

I will say this again, I strongly disagree that reading books is a waste of time for children. Sure, sometimes it's good for children to play outside with their friends for some outdoor activity, but you can't beat the benefits of reading books for children as
indoor activity. It makes less screen time for them, and it makes them learn many knowledges that will stick to their brain for a long time.
