Fashion is not just what we wear, nowadays it has become part of our lifestyle. For people with particular professions such as singer, entertainer, presenter, celebrity, public relation officer, and any other carrier that require certain standards to their appearance, fashion is significant. Consequently, demand for fashion production is increasing from time to time. Since those people are suggested to wear different clothes in every occasion to help their performance look intriguing for public, fast fashion become popular lately. Fast fashion is a term related to industry that produce type of clothes purposed for short-term use.
Some people that have excitement of mixing and matching clothes did not know yet that behind the production of their favorite brands, there are negative impacts of fast fashion. If every model is released in high number, just imagine how plenty of clothes are produced for several models during certain period. The company need more workers to met the target, and to minimize the production costs, child labor usually happens. There are no reason to normalize child labor since it is against human right.
It is just one example among other potential social impacts of fast fashion. For instance, even if there is no employment of children, big company often recruit workers with very low level of education to pay them with lower amount of money to increase profit margin. They manage to open their factories in countries with lower minimum standard of salary, such as Bangladesh and India. Government need to apply strict regulations to make community welfare as the main priority. There are some terms and conditions need to be agreed by the companies regarding to the employment and minimum salary. Corporate social responsibility need to be set as compulsory to force the companies for giving positive contribution for the local communities.
Besides the social impacts, there are some environmental impacts of fast fashion production. The chemical waste can be very hazardous and affects the surroundings. Particular treatments are needed before the waste released, to avoid damages to the nearest ecosystems. Again, regulations play critical low. Some requirements regarding to waste treatment need to be fulfilled before companies get permissions to open factories. Overall, we need to put serious attempts to pursue sustainable environment and community welfare from the negative impacts of fast fashion.
